Some schools are denying teenage girls cervical cancer vaccinations on the grounds of religion.
Under the Freedom of Information Act, GP magazine found 24 schools in 83 of the 152 Primary Care Trust areas in England had opted out of the programme citing strict Christian principles and suggesting that as girls do not practise sex outside marriage, they did not need the vaccine, which protects against a virus spread through intimate contact which causes cervical cancer. Few of the schools opting out did not inform local GPs.
