Police defend officer who shot N.Y. college student

MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) ? The president of a New York police union is defending an officer who accidentally killed a Hofstra University student during a standoff with an armed intruder last week.

Nassau County Patrolman's Benevolent Association President James Carver says the only person responsible for Andrea Rebello's death is Dalton Smith, the gunman who was holding her hostage.

Carver says the officer's job was to get inside the house and protect as many people as he could.

Investigators say Rebello was being held in a headlock by Smith when he pointed his weapon at the officer, prompting the officer to open fire.

Rebello was killed by one of eight shots fired by the officer. Smith was also killed.

The officer involved has not been named. He's on sick leave while authorities investigate.
