New clot removal devices show promise for treating stroke patients

Feb. 25, 2013 ? Specialists at Stony Brook Medicine's Cerebrovascular and Stroke Center (CVC) are treating patients with a new generation of blood clot removal devices that show promise in successfully revascularizing stroke patients, including those with large vessel blockages. The Solitaire Flow Restoration Device and the Trevo device, approved by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2012 to treat stroke caused by the sudden obstruction of a brain blood vessel (acute ischemic stroke) showed improved results over a previous standard and first generation clot-removal device in clinical trials.

"We have had excellent outcomes using these new devices," said David Fiorella, M.D., Ph.D., a Professor of Clinical Neurological Surgery and Radiology at Stony Brook University School of Medicine and Co-Director of the CVC. "In acute ischemic stroke, 'time is brain,' and in some cases just minutes matter. Therefore, restoring blood flow in an effective and timely manner is critical to the survival and recovery of stroke patients. These new devices enable us to quickly restore blood flow and retrieve the clot in most patients," said Dr. Fiorella, who has performed some 30 procedures on stroke patients using the new devices.

"These blot clot removal devices are an important new component of our armamentarium against stroke" said Henry Woo, MD, Professor of Neurological Surgery and Radiology and Co-Director of the CVC, who has also used both devices in patient procedures. "Our center provides endovascular treatment for acute stroke 24/7, and by having the latest technologies to remove brain blood clots, and the expertise to perform endovascular procedures, our Center remains on the cutting-edge against this life-threatening condition."

According to the American Stroke Association, stroke remains the fourth leading cause of death and leading cause of adult disability in the United States. On average a stroke occurs every 40 seconds in the country, and someone dies from a stroke every four minutes. These statistics speak to the need to develop more effective drugs, devices, and procedures to treat stroke.

Recent results of clinical trials reported in The New England Journal of Medicine (February 2013) about the use of first generation of blood clot removal devices in the endovascular treatment of acute ischemic stroke revealed that endovascular treatment does not result in better patient outcomes compared to standard drug treatments. Dr. Fiorella contends that while these trial results are important in the search for the best treatment protocols for acute ischemic stroke, the new devices and techniques are markedly better than those used to treat the majority of patients in these trials and may yet prove to be the most effective approach in select patients. Further research trials are being conducted at Stony Brook to investigate the efficacy of these newer, better devices in acute ischemic stroke.

The new devices that Stony Brook cerebrovascular specialists use to perform revascularization are expandable wire-mesh systems that collapse and are delivered into the brain blood vessels through small flexible tubes (microcatheters) which are guided from the groin to the brain. The devices open at the site of the clot, displacing the occlusion and immediately restoring blood flow to the brain. When the devices are withdrawn from the blood vessel, they take the clot with them, allowing the clot to be removed from the blood vessel.

Dr. Fiorella said that while intravenous clot-busting drugs remain a standard part of stroke therapy, endovascular therapies using the new devices are particularly beneficial when treating certain stroke patients.

"In many of the more severe stroke cases where the main arteries of the brain are blocked, intravenous medications are predictably ineffective, failing to open the occluded artery in 70 to 90 percent of the cases. Also, many patients are not eligible for intravenous clot busting medication because of their time of presentation, existing medical conditions, recent surgery, or the medications they take, such as blood thinners," he explained. "In these cases where intravenous medications are ineffective or contraindicated, endovascular treatments using these new devices offer patients the most promise."

"I feel extremely good and am able to do the things I did before my stroke, and that includes taking care of my grandchildren and running road races," said Michael Jezewski, 66, a retiree from Centereach, N.Y., who ran a five kilometer race just two months after his May 2012 stroke. "I believe that Dr. Fiorella's procedure did save my life and contributed greatly to my quick recovery."

Jezewski did not have a history of stroke and collapsed while at doctor's appointment. He was rushed to Stony Brook where Dr. Fiorella performed endovascular treatment with one of the new devices within two hours of Jezewski's sudden collapse. Jezewski's symptoms started with fatigue and no feeling on the right side of his body, and then quickly progressed to paralysis and the inability to speak. Upon awaking from the clot removal procedure, the majority of his symptoms had completely resolved.

When Shelley Broven, 66, of Setauket, N.Y., began to feel dizzy and had a hard time speaking during her husband's 70th birthday party in November 2012, friends called an ambulance from the restaurant. She was rushed to Stony Brook where Dr. Fiorella performed endovascular treatment with a new generation device.

"I don't recall much of what happened after that incident, but within a week I was out of the hospital, beginning rehabilitation, and feeling pretty good," said Broven. "Each week I have more energy and can express myself more clearly," added Broven, whose stroke resulted from a nearly completely blocked carotid artery which sent a blood clot into her brain blood vessels.

About the New Devices

In two separate multicenter clinical trials reported in The Lancet the new devices were compared to a standard first generation clot removal device called the Merci Retriever.

In one published report, the Solitaire device opened blocked arteries in approximately 70 percent of the patients, compared to only 30 percent treated with the previous device. When other therapies were used with Solitaire, the success rate improved to 80 percent. After three months, 58 percent of the patients with the Solitaire device had a good neurological outcome in comparison to 33 percent of those treated with the standard device. In addition, the mortality rates were less than half in those treated with the newer generation device.

Another published report compared the Trevo device with the Merci Retriever. In this trial, the new Trevo device was superior to the older device, with an 86 percent success rate in opening the blocked brain blood vessel. When other therapies were added, the Trevo device success rate was more than 90 percent.

Introducing our latest arsenal in the fight against cancer - Cancer ...

A scientist in the lab

Our committee has invested ?23million in new research

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we?re able to spend hundreds of millions of pounds every year on life-saving cancer research.

And our highly experienced Science Committee makes sure this money goes to fund the most creative, promising and innovative research in the UK.

The committee recently met to decide which pioneering new research projects have what it takes to lead the fight against cancer.

After careful consideration the committee chose to spend over ?23million in world class research across a spectrum of work ? from screening to trials and cancer biology.

Here are some of the highlights.

Testing new treatments

New and better treatments are essential for ensuring more people survive cancer. So we have approved 18 crucial trials to test new treatments for people with cancer.

Two of these were funded under The International Rare Cancers Initiative ? as part of our commitment to beating rare cancers.

Rare cancers make up around a fifth of all cancer diagnoses in Europe ? making them more widespread than any single common cancer. But because the numbers of people with each of these cancer types is small, we need to look far and wide to reach enough people to run clinical trials.

This important Initiative will set up international clinical trials to boost the progress of much-needed new treatments for these patients.

We will be supporting Dr Richard Wilson, who leads the Northern Ireland Cancer Trials Network and will be leading a study for people with a type of small bowel cancer. Here?s a video of Richard explaining his work:

Anal cancers affect just over 900 people in the UK each year. Dr Sheela Rao, based at the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, will be investigating the best way to treat people with an advanced form of this cancer type.

Dr Peter Hillmen

Dr Peter Hillmen is running a leukaemia trial

As well as these trials for rarer forms of the disease, another promising study comes from Dr Peter Hillmen from the University of Leeds. He?s testing whether a new targeted drug is better than chemotherapy for people with the most common type of leukaemia, called chronic lymphocytic leukaemia.

Around 2,400 people are diagnosed with CLL in the UK each year. This important avenue of research on a drug with the potential to be highly effective ? but with a low toxicity profile and few side effects ? could one day deliver a much better option for people with this type of cancer.

You can find more about current UK clinical trials on our Trials Database.

From the lab bench to the clinic

We are also supporting 13 high-quality projects from some of the UK?s leading cancer researchers, who are making fundamental discoveries about how tumours grow and spread ? and who want to take steps to translate their observations into treatments and diagnostic tests that benefitpeople with cancer.

In Edinburgh, Professor Margaret Frame, is focusing on one of the biggest challenges in cancer treatment ? how to stop the disease spreading to other parts of the body.

Spreading cells

Researchers are studying how cancers spread

Most deaths from cancer are caused by spread of the disease and her project will help her understand how the movement and spread of cancer cells is controlled. Ultimately, she aims to translate these discoveries to develop new drugs that target cancer cells and effectively treat people.

Dr Jude Fitzgibbon at Queen Mary, University of London will be developing biomarkers to reveal how people with lymphoma respond to treatment.

By bringing together a team of clinicians and scientists with complementary backgrounds, he?ll be answering timely questions which will lead to better outcomes for people with cancer.

And finally?

We?re also setting up large population studies and research into screening, prevention and early diagnosis, with five exciting new projects in this area.

Professor Michele Coleman

Professor Coleman is studying international differences in survival

Of particular note is the CONCORD2 study led by Professor Michel Coleman, from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

He will be carrying out the largest and most comprehensive cancer registration study in the world, to understand trends in cancer occurrence and survival.

His work will promote important international partnerships to evaluate the effectiveness of cancer control at national, regional and global levels ? using data from 50 different countries.

The results will contribute to the World Health Organisation?s action plan to prevent and control non-communicable diseases.

Another highlight is a study, which will be led by Professor Raj Bhopal at the University of Edinburgh, aiming to understand inequalities in cancer outcomes in minority ethnic populations across the UK.

The study will investigate whether there are ethnic inequalities in both bowel cancer screening participation and in the results of the screening ? and the reasons for any disparity.

This is a priority for us, because we know that diagnosing cancer at an early stage, when the chances of successful treatment are higher, is is an important area which could help improve cancer survival rates for people in the UK.

This study should help address some of the underlying reasons for late diagnosis.

United we are stronger than cancer

Taken together, these studies give us a lot to look forward to. They exemplify not only the many ways in which we are trying to tackle cancer, but also what we can achieve when we work together ? using the commitment of our supporters and the brilliance of our researchers to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.

But while ?23m is a considerable investment, there?s still a wealth of excellent research out there that we can?t afford to fund ? and that?s why continued support from the public is so vital to our progress.

Judge blocks shareholder vote on Apple proposal

NEW YORK (AP) - A federal judge is blocking Apple from conducting a shareholder vote on a package of governance proposals, handing a victory to a rebel investor who is trying to persuade the company to share more of its cash with its investors.

U.S. District Judge Richard Sullivan in New York ruled Friday that Apple Inc. was wrong to bundle four amendments to its corporate charter into one proposal for a vote at next Wednesday's annual meeting. Shareholders should get to vote on the amendments separately, he said. Although the ruling was preliminary, before both sides had a chance to fully make their case, Sullivan said Apple was likely to lose. He granted dissident investors a preliminary injunction against Apple pending a full trial.

Apple will comply with Sullivan's order and withdraw the issue from the agenda of next week's meeting, said Steve Dowling, a spokesman for the Cupertino, Calif., company. It had appeared on the shareholder voting list as proposal No. 2.

"We are disappointed with the court's ruling," Dowling said. "Proposal No. 2 is part of our efforts to further enhance corporate governance and serve our shareholders' best interests."

Greenlight Capital, a hedge fund run by Wall Street maverick David Einhorn, sued Apple over the proposal because it would remove the board's ability to issue preferred stock without shareholder authorization. Einhorn wants Apple to issue "iPrefs," preferred shares with a guaranteed dividend, as a way of committing the company to sharing its massive profits with shareholders.

Einhorn has been trying to rally Wall Street to vote against the Apple proposal as a way of showing their displeasure with the company's capital-allocation policies. Right now, Apple hands only a small amount of its profits to shareholders through dividends and stock buybacks. The rest of the money goes in the bank, where Apple's cash hoard amounted to $137 billion at the end of last year. That amount grows by about $40 billion every year, much of it from selling trend-setting gadgets such as the iPad and the iPhone.

Investors almost universally want Apple to hand out at least some of that cash, but Einhorn hasn't gotten much support for his "iPrefs" idea or his "No on Proposal 2" campaign.

Last week, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company's proposal puts more power in the hands of shareholders, making it difficult to understand why a shareholder would fight it. Calling Greenlight's campaign a waste of time, Cook said Apple wouldn't squander money by mailing letters to shareholders to persuade them to vote for the proposal.

The California Public Employees' Retirement System, the country's largest pension fund, had said it would vote for Apple's proposal, because it would have strengthened shareholder rights. Among other measures, it would let shareholders vote against directors.

Apple's stock fell 31 cents to $450.50 in extended trading after the ruling came out.

"This is a significant win for all Apple shareholders and for good corporate governance," Greenlight said in a statement. "We are pleased the court has recognized that Apple's proxy is not compliant with (federal securities) rules because it bundles different matters in Proposal 2. We look forward to Apple's evaluation of our iPref idea and we encourage fellow shareholders to urge Apple to unlock the significant value residing on its balance sheet."

A company with excess cash will usually reward shareholders by raising its dividend or issuing a one-time dividend. It could also buy back more shares. Einhorn believes none of these routes would yield as much shareholder value as the iPrefs, because their 4 percent annual dividend yield would make them attractive to investors that otherwise wouldn't look at Apple shares, such as pension funds and endowments.

Greenlight has been an Apple shareholder since 2010 and has 1.3 million shares worth about $580 million.

NASA's Basement Nuclear Reactor

Good luck with recycling that, where I live it's hard enough to get rid of used auto oil at the local dump (municipal recycling facility).

And if it's like any other "white goods" it's going to be upgraded, have parts replaced, newer model put in.

? Going to love what happens when your old nuclear powerplant goes past its warranty date and you want some new hoses, want to chuck out the old model for a bigger model etc. How does that work for the local recycling facilities? or if you want to knock down an old house and level the ground so you've got to dump an old nuclear reactor somewhere?

I'm sure there's a simple answer, please enlighten me. Apparently some cities have mountains of discarded washing machines/fridges/other white goods, will we have the same of nuclear reactors?

Facebook to put old, rarely viewed photos into 'cold storage'

If a photo is on Facebook and no one looks at it, was it ever even uploaded?

Poor attempt at a joke aside, there's something with which we need to come to terms: There are a lot of photos on Facebook that just sit around, taking up precious data storage space. The social network can't exactly delete these photos just because no one's looking, but it can store them in a more cost-effective and energy-efficient way.

According to the Oregonian's Mike Rogoway, Facebook's testing moving what he describes as "archival posts that people don?t need every day" into cold storagein the social network's data center inPrineville, Oregon.

As fun as it might be to imagine a gigantic meatlocker full of servers, cold storage refers to a data center in which most of the computers are asleep, with a few keeping watch ? and able to wake the others ? for incoming requests to view older items. Compare that to a hot storage data center in which all the computers are wide-awake and ready to show you the information you request almost instantly. (Of course, the difference in the time it takes to grab something from cold storage versus the time it takes to grab something from hot storage is so slight that a typical user could never even tell the difference. Think second or millisecond delays, rather than anything more dramatic.)

Facebook says, according to Rogoway, that "82 percent of its traffic is focused on just 8 percent of its photos." Given that detail, it's not exactly tough to understand why the company's considering cold storage data centers ? especially since they will cost the social network about a third less than standard data centers, offer eight times more storage, and run five times more energy efficiently.

Flu shot doing a poor job of protecting elderly

ATLANTA (AP) ? It turns out this year's flu shot is doing a startlingly dismal job of protecting senior citizens, the most vulnerable age group.

The vaccine is proving only 9 percent effective in people 65 and older against the harsh strain of the flu that is predominant this season, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday.

Health officials are baffled as to why this is so. But the findings help explain why so many older people have been hospitalized with the flu this year.

Despite the findings, the CDC stood by its recommendation that everyone over 6 months get flu shots, the elderly included, because some protection is better than none, and because those who are vaccinated and still get sick may suffer less severe symptoms.

"Year in and year out, the vaccine is the best protection we have," said CDC flu expert Dr. Joseph Bresee.

Overall, across the age groups studied, the vaccine's effectiveness was found to be a moderate 56 percent, which means those who got a shot have a 56 percent lower chance of winding up at the doctor with the flu. That is somewhat worse than what has been seen in other years.

For those 65 and older, the vaccine was only 27 percent effective against the three strains it is designed to protect against, the worst level in about a decade. It did a particularly poor job against the tough strain that is causing more than three-quarters of the illnesses this year.

It is well known that flu vaccine tends to protect younger people better than older ones. Elderly people have weaker immune systems that don't respond as well to flu shots, and they are more vulnerable to the illness and its complications, including pneumonia.

But health officials said they don't know why this year's vaccine did so poorly in that age group.

One theory, as yet unproven, is that older people's immune systems were accustomed to strains from the last two years and had more trouble switching gears to handle this year's different, harsh strain.

The preliminary data for senior citizens is less than definitive. It is based on fewer than 300 people scattered among five states.

But it will no doubt surprise many people that the effectiveness is that low, said Michael Osterholm, a University of Minnesota infectious-disease expert who has tried to draw attention to the need for a more effective flu vaccine.

Among infectious diseases, flu is considered one of the nation's leading killers. On average, about 24,000 Americans die each flu season, according to the CDC.

This flu season started in early December, a month earlier than usual, and peaked by the end of year. Hospitalization rates for people 65 and older have been some of the highest in a decade, at 146 per 100,000 people.

Flu viruses tend to mutate more quickly than others, so a new vaccine is formulated each year to target the strains expected to be the major threats. CDC officials have said that in formulating this year's vaccine, scientists accurately anticipated the strains that are circulating this season.

Because of the guesswork involved, scientists tend to set a lower bar for flu vaccine. While childhood vaccines against diseases like measles are expected to be 90 or 95 percent effective, a flu vaccine that's 60 to 70 percent effective in the U.S. is considered pretty good. By that standard, this year's vaccine is OK.

For senior citizens, a flu vaccine is considered pretty good if it's in the 30 to 40 percent range, said Dr. Arnold Monto, a University of Michigan flu expert.

A high-dose version of the flu shot was recently made available for those 65 and older, but the new study was too small to show whether that has made a difference.

The CDC estimates are based on about 2,700 people who got sick in December and January. The researchers traced back to see who had gotten shots and who hadn't. An earlier, smaller study put the vaccine's overall effectiveness at 62 percent, but other factors that might have influenced that figure weren't taken into account.

The CDC's Bresee said there is a danger in providing preliminary results because it may result in people doubting ? or skipping ? flu shots. But the figures were released to warn older people who got shots that they may still get sick and shouldn't ignore any serious flu-like symptoms, he said.

University of Miami has no comment on report of HGH testing

Last week, the University of Miami released a statement about its drug-testing policy for baseball, in light of recent reports that linked the names of several Major League Baseball players ? including some who played for UM ? as well as UM strength and conditioning coach Jimmy Goins, to a now-defunct ?anti-aging?? clinic that allegedly distributed performance-enhancing drugs.

The statement said no student-athlete has tested positive for anabolic steroids since UM enacted its comprehensive drug testing policy in 2005. It also said that UM does not currently test for Human Growth Hormones.

On Wednesday, Chris Freet, the UM associate athletic director for communication and marketing, would not comment on a report by The Associated Press ?that Miami?s baseball team has been tested for performance-enhancing drug use, including human growth hormone,?? according to an unnamed source.

The report cited the source indicating that the HGH drug-testing results have not yet arrived, and that ?given the school?s link to baseball?s latest drug mess, the Hurricanes wanted additional testing.?

Goins has been suspended by UM while it conducts an investigation into the PED issue, first linked to the Hurricanes in a Miami New Times report last month.

University of Miami baseball coach Jim Morris had his Hurricanes gather for an evening practice Wednesday in preparation for the season-opening series against Rutgers this weekend.

Before the AP report surfaced, Morris said he had no further information on Goins? status, and mentioned to The Miami Herald that no one on the college level tests for HGH.

How to have a Baby shower extravaganza : Singapore Parenting ...

Who doesn?t love a great baby shower? A new baby should be celebrated to the max! So if you are going to be hosting a baby shower in the near future, this article is for you. Or if you know someone who is?pass the word.

shutterstock 51562492 How to have a Baby shower extravaganza

Baby shower themes

It?s a baby-that?s the theme, right? Well, yes, but let?s think outside the box a bit-or at least make the ?box? bigger.

  • Spa showers. Treat the mom-to-be (and yourselves) to a manicure or pedicure at a local spa. Enjoy sparkling grape juice and cheese and crackers. Oh, and don?t forget to give her a gift card for a massage or other spa treatments a month or so after the baby arrives.
  • Thaw and bake shower. Bring a frozen casserole, lasagna or gift card for a restaurant that does carry out so new moms and dads don?t have to worry about cooking the first few weeks their little bundle of joy is turning their world upside down.
  • Toy showers. Decorate using stuffed animals or story books and story book characters-making the d?cor your gift to the mom-to-be. Ask guests to bring similar gifts; encouraging them to think beyond infancy (age 2 to 4) to give baby something more than what they?ll need those first few months of life. For refreshments?an old-fashioned tea party for little girls and a circus themed fare for little boys.
  • ?I Remember When? showers. Have guests bring a picture of them during their pregnancy or with their newborn(s) as well as? gift similar to their favorite baby shower gift. Have fun sharing stories and memories.
  • Traditional showers. Fill the room with pacifiers, baby bottles, diapers, teddy bears and rubber ducks. A good old-fashioned baby shower is often times just what mom wants and needs.
  • Hand-made shower. Ask guests to bring gifts that are hand-made (not necessarily by them). Hand-made quilts, blankets, bibs, bonnets, sweaters, wall hangings, busy-books?. These treasures are things than can be handed down for generations to come.

Those crazy baby shower games

?Yes, every baby shower needs a few games. When planning the games you will play, you need to keep the following in mind:

  • Your guests-will they be grandmas, aunts, older family friends or the younger moms in your circle of friends
  • The items needed for the games you want to play. Will you have them on hand or do you need to shop

Large scale production of Edge-Functionalized Graphene Nanoplatelets (EFGnPs)

Feb. 12, 2013 ? Researchers from the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), South Korea have pioneered a simple, but efficient and eco-friendly way to produce Edge-selectively functionalized graphene nanoplatelets (EFGnPs) by dry ball milling graphite in the presence of various gases.

The electrocatalytic activity of heteroatom-doped carbon-based nanomaterials has become a growing interest in the past few years due to their potential applications for fuel cells and metal-air batteries.

Several approaches currently exist for the doping of heteroatoms into graphitic structure, but these suffer from high manufacturing costs and technical difficulties.

Researchers at Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) have come up with a simple, but efficient and eco-friendly alternative which sees the production of edge-selectively functionalized graphene nanoplatelets (EFGnPs) via a dry ball milling graphite in the presence of various gases. The dry ball mill is effectively a type of grinder, traditionally use to grind ores, chemicals and other raw materials into fine powder. It can also be used on a atomic level, as is the case when producing EFGnPs.

Due to the versatility of mechanochemical reactions driven by ball milling, various functional groups could be introduced to the broken edges of graphene nanoplatelets (GnPs) in the presence of appropriate chemical vapors, liquids, or solids in the ball-mill crusher.

The mechanism of edge-selective functionalization in the ball-milling process involves the reaction between reactive carbon species generated by a mechanochemical cleavage of graphitic C-C bonds and gases in a sealed ball-mill crusher. The dormant active carbon species, which remain unreactive in the crusher, could be terminated by subsequent exposure to air moisture. As a result, some oxygenated groups, such as hydroxyl (-OH) and carboxylic acid (-COOH), can be introduced at the broken edges of the preformed EFGnPs with minimal basal plane distortion.

A scanning electron microscope (SEM) is used to demonstrate the mechanochemical cracking of a large grain sized piece of graphite into a small grain size of EFGnPs. Due to the reaction between the newly formed active carbon species at the broken edges of the GnPs and corresponding gases, the ball milling and subsequent workup procedures were found to increase the weight of all the resultant EFGnPs with respect to the graphite starting material. These results indicated that the mechanochemical functionalization of graphite was efficient. The resultant EFGnPs are active enough for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells, and hence they will make expensive platinum (Pt)-based electrocatalysts to take a back seat.

Jong-Beom Baek, professor and director of the Interdisciplinary School of Green Energy/Low-Dimensional Carbon Materials Center at UNIST commented: "We have developed a simple, but versatile ball-milling process to efficiently exfoliate the pristine graphite directly into EFGnPs. Various microscopic and spectroscopic measurements were performed to confirm the reaction mechanisms for the edge functionalization of graphite by ball milling in the presence of corresponding gases and their superior slectrocatalytic activities of the ORR," said Prof. Baek.

This research was funded by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (Minister Lee Ju-Ho) through the National Research Foundation of Korea (President Seung Jong Lee) and published in Journal of the American Chemical Society.

UNT close to adding baseball program for first time in 25 years

DENTON ? UNT is close to adding a baseball program.

UNT fielded a team from 1984-88. The school formed a committee that over the last several months has examined the viability of reviving the program and building an on-campus venue.

?We brought some people together to help determine the funding process for a facility as well as the program for the first two years,? athletic director Rick Villarreal said recently. ?We have made a lot of progress. Hopefully in the near future, we will be able to lay out the situation publicly.?

UNT is leaving the Sun Belt Conference to join Conference USA this summer.

First lady will host 102-year-old determined voter

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A determined Florida centenarian who had to make two trips and wait several hours to vote for President Barack Obama last fall was invited to sit with first lady Michelle Obama during Tuesday's State of the Union. Her resolve became a symbol of early voting obstacles in the presidential election.

Desiline Victor, 102, of Miami, endured a weather-delayed flight to Washington on Monday in order to get to town for Obama's address. She will be among the guests seated with Mrs. Obama, an opportunity she called "a beautiful thing."

Also expected to sit with Mrs. Obama are:

?Cleopatra Cowley-Pendleton and Nathaniel A. Pendleton Sr. of Chicago, the parents of 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton, who was shot to death just days after performing in Washington during Obama's inauguration.

?Haile Thomas, 12, of Tucson, Ariz., who helped start the HAPPY Organization, a group that produces online healthy cooking videos aimed at children.

?Alan Aleman, a Mexican immigrant who is one of the first people in Nevada allowed to remain in the country under an Obama administration initiative for immigrant children whose parents lack legal permission to be in the U.S. Aleman is pursuing a biology degree and hopes to be a doctor.

?Mayor Marie Lopez Rogers, the first Latina mayor of Avondale, Ariz. She was elected in 2006 after serving 14 years on the city council. Growing up, she picked cotton with her parents on farmland that is now the site of City Hall.

?Sgt. Carlos Evans, a U.S. Marine from Fayetteville, N.C., who lost both legs and his left hand during service that included three deployments to Iraq and one to Afghanistan. The president signed Evans' prosthetic arm when Evans previously visited the White House.

In October, Victor went to the polls on the first Sunday of early voting in Florida. That day, she had to make two visits to her voting precinct, and waited three hours on the first attempt, in order to cast her vote for Obama.

Her determination, despite the physical strain, inspired others to remain and endure up to six-hour waits.

"She just wants everyone to know she wants everyone to vote," said Victor's nephew, Mathieu Pierre-Louis, who translated her words from Creole. Her vote, she said through her nephew, is special. She said she loves Obama and will tell him so if she gets the chance.

A farmworker from Haiti, Victor was born in 1910. She arrived in the U.S. in 1989 and was naturalized in 2005. She first voted in the 2008 presidential election and cast her ballot for Obama.

A slew of states, including Victor's home state of Florida, implemented new voting restrictions in the two years after Obama's historic first election, in which black and Hispanic turnout reached record highs. The laws reduced early voting days, instituted rules requiring voters to show accepted forms of photo identification and curtailed some voter registration activities.

Obama again enjoyed overwhelming support from minority voters in his victory over GOP rival Mitt Romney last year.

Judith Browne Dianis, co-director of the Advancement Project, a group that advocates for civil rights, said Victor's story underscores the need to fix the voting system to ensure, among other things, that it accommodates elderly voters.

"It's clear Ms. Victor's story is a story that shows the tenacity of a voter to overcome barriers," Dianis said. "Unfortunately there were dozens who didn't get to vote because of problems."

Do we need 17+ hours of NBA All-Stars on TV? Nope

Television ? As a bonus, you can hear Charles Barkley talk about himself for an hour.

TNT is planning more than 17 hours of coverage related to the NBA All-Star Game, which seems like a lot for a game that doesn?t mean anything.

That?s not a slam at the NBA in particular. With the exception of Major League Baseball, there aren?t any all-star games that mean anything. (And MLB awarding the World Series home-field advantage to the league that wins its otherwise meaningless game remains a topic for debate.)

And the NBA All-Star Game might be the one contest that actually means more to the players than to the fans.

"The first one is always the most special," said ex-player/current TNT broadcaster Charles Barkley. "You take so many people with you. I took my mother, grandmother, my financial guy, my brothers."

"It was a dream come true," said TNT?s Steve Smith, who called it a "highlight" of his career.

It?s certainly a chance for the players to get some recognition, which they get so darn little of in the NBA. (That?s sarcasm, folks.) And it can be fun to watch if you aren?t a fan of defense or team play.

On Sunday, you?ve got the pregame (5 p.m.); the game (6 p.m.); and the postgame. But that?s just part of the story.

But there?s an argument to be made that the more interesting part of TNT?s TV plan won?t be All-Star Game itself. The rest of the schedule includes:

? The BBVA Rising Stars Challenge (Friday, 7 p.m.): Top young players on two squads chosen by Charles Barkley and Shaquille O?Neal play what amounts to, um, an all-star game.

There are no Jazz players on either roster, but there is one Utah tie. Karl Malone is scheduled to be a "guest analyst" on the halftime and postgame shows. Because a game like this really needs TV analysis.

story continues below

? The State Farm All-Star Saturday Night (6 p.m.) will feature the Sears Shooting Stars competition; the Taco Bell Skills Challenge; the Foot Locker and the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest ... because you can never have too many advertisers.

There is, at least, competition here. There?s an Eastern Conference vs. Western Conference angle, with points tallied throughout the evening and money raised for charity.

It was hard to argue with Barkley when he said, "Everybody loves the Slam Dunk contest." Just hope that team thing doesn?t ruin it.

The defending champion, Utah? Jeremy Evans, will return to compete.

? If you enjoy seeing people sit around and talk about basketball, you?ll want to check out "Open Court: All-Star" on Saturday at 5 p.m. Barkley, Miller, Steve Kerr, O?Neal, Kenny Smith, Steve Smith and Chris Webber will yack it up for an hour.

Because what an all-star game really needs is lots of pregam analysis.

? And if you enjoy Barkley talking about Barkley, don?t miss "Sir Charles at 50," an hour (Saturday, 9 p.m. ? time approximate) in which he reflects on his legacy as he approaches the half-century mark on Feb. 20.

I think I?ll probably skip that. And I?m a fan of his work on TV.

Yen near lows vs dollar, Asian shares ease in subdued trade

TOKYO (Reuters) - The yen hovered near its lows against the dollar and Tokyo stocks jumped closer to a 33-month high on Tuesday after markets took comments from a U.S. official as approval for Japan to pursue anti-deflation policies that weaken the yen.

U.S. Treasury Undersecretary Lael Brainard said on Monday the United States supports Japanese efforts to end deflation, but she noted that the G7 has long been committed to exchange rates determined by market forces, "except in rare circumstances where excess volatility or disorderly movements might warrant cooperation.

"Her (Brainard's) comments gave confidence to the market. It was surprising, and was taken as the Obama administration giving a green light to 'Abenomics'," said Takuya Takahashi, a market analyst at Daiwa Securities.

Japan has faced some overseas criticism that it is intentionally trying to weaken the yen with monetary easing, but talk of a so-called currency war was dialled back ahead of a Group of 20 meeting in Moscow on Friday and Saturday.

G20 officials said on Monday the Group of Seven nations are considering a statement this week reaffirming their commitment to "market-determined" exchange rates.

European Central Bank council member Jens Weidmann also said the euro was not overvalued at current levels.

The dollar slipped 0.3 percent to 94.185 yen after marking its highest level since May 2010 of 94.465 on Monday. The euro eased 0.3 percent to 126.12 yen after rising more than 2 percent on Monday. It hit its highest since April 2010 of 127.71 yen last week.

"I think the yen's weakening is a function of (playing)catch-up," and not Japan resorting to deliberate devaluation of its currency, said Andrew Wilkinson, chief economic strategist at Miller Tabak & Co. in New York. "It's the market's way of saying: 'We're convinced there is a movement afoot to reinflate Japan.'"

The yen is pressured by anticipation that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will endorse a far more dovish Bank of Japan regime when the current leadership's term ends next month, although the BOJ is expected to refrain from taking fresh easing steps when it meets this week.

Share trading was subdued with many regional bourses shut for holidays. Encouraging trade data from China late last week was lending support to sentiment but non-Japan markets lacked momentum as investors awaited key events such as the U.S. president's State of the Union address for trading cues.

European markets are seen inching lower, with the Euro STOXX 50 index futures down 0.1 percent. A 0.2 percent drop in U.S. stock futures also suggested a soft Wall Street start. <.l><.eu><.n/>

The MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> fell 0.1 percent, with Australian shares closing flat ahead of corporate earnings due this week.

The weaker yen in turn hoisted the Nikkei stock average <.n225> to close 1.9 percent higher on improving earnings prospects for exporters. <.t/>

Trading resumed in Japan and South Korea but markets in Singapore, Hong Kong, mainland China, Malaysia and Taiwan remained closed.

STATE OF UNION ADDRESS

Currency and equities markets were also looking ahead to President Barack Obama's State of the Union address later on Tuesday night, for any signs of a deal to avert automatic spending cuts due to take effect March 1.

"We believe that the G20's take on currency wars, Mr. Obama's upcoming state of the union address, and data on the current condition of the U.S. economy should help markets assess where the global recovery stands and where we are heading," Barclays Capital said in a research report.

U.S. and Chinese data last week lifted the tech-focused Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> to a 12-year closing high and the Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> to a five-year peak on Friday.

Financial markets showed a muted reaction to the news that North Korea has conducted a nuclear test.

"The test was not something that makes your heart pound as much as a pressing situation between Iran and Israel," said Kaname Gokon, research manager at brokerage Okato Shoji, referring to the threat of possible military action to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

U.S. crude futures edged down 0.1 percent to $96.90 a barrel while Brent steadied around $118.

Spot gold stayed near a one-month low.
