ERIE, PA - Mercyhurst University biologists have received a $30,000 grant to study the impact of cold winter temperatures on the hemlock woolly adelgid, a small, aphidlike insect that is decimating the hemlock trees of eastern U.S. forests.

"The adelgid is considered one of the greatest threats to our eastern forests; already it has spread to 18 states, from Maine to Georgia," said Michael Elnitsky, assistant professor of biology, who wrote the proposal that earned Mercyhurst funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR). "Pennsylvania is very much at the center of the range expansion of the adelgid, with infestation already across two-thirds of the state."

Although the invasive pest has not yet reached Erie County, Elnitksy said it is only a matter of time. Studies have documented the adelgid's vulnerability to the cold, so it seems reasonable that climate change trends, specifically this winter's warmer temperatures, may accelerate its distribution.

The adelgid feeds on the phloem of hemlock trees by inserting its stylet into twigs, injecting toxic saliva that weakens the tree, causing needle loss, reduced growth and eventual death within four to six years of infestation.

Although the adelgid has been in Pennsylvania for 40 years, there are no thorough studies that examine the low temperature tolerance and winter survival strategies of the species.

Elnitsky's research team, which he expects to include between five and eight students in each of the next two years, will identify 20 to 25 hemlock stands across the state and monitor the environmental conditions impacting them throughout the winter. Besides field work, researchers will also conduct lab studies to assess the species' cold tolerance.

Through the Mercyhurst research, it is hoped that the DCNR, the Bureau of Forestry and regional land managers will be able to predict insect population size and the likelihood of outbreaks, the potential impact of the adelgid and its rate of expansion.

5 Easy Strategies for Eating Healthy When You Travel ...

If you travel on any type of regular basis for work, meetings or even recreation you?ve developed a philosophy about your eating habits on the road. Many people adopt the ?Wahoo, I?m traveling, it?s a picnic? attitude and then complain about gaining weight, not feeling good or why they can?t stick to their healthy lifestyle.

The other philosophy, and the one I subscribe to is that traveling is no different than home and just takes a little preparation and commitment. In order to eat healthy I have to plan. I have a bit of experience on this topic because I traveled for work from 1988-1993 and now as a professional speaker I travel regularly. For me the choice is a no-brainer because my health is a top priority.

It?s a simple choice: How do you want to feel? Do you want to feel energized and sleep well so you can wake up in a different time zone without it kicking your ass, or feel groggy from eating fatty foods, drinking too much and having desserts you don?t normally eat? The affects/rewards are immediate regardless of the path you choose.

Here?s five proven strategies for keeping on your healthy eating plan while traveling.

1. Plan snacks for the trip
Pack snacks that will cover you from the time you leave home until you reach your destination. If you?re flying, the airlines don?t offer food anymore (not much of a loss there) so you need to be prepared. I always carry snacks including, small carrots, almonds,?apples, bananas, celery with almond butter?and protein bars. This way I can keep my blood sugar in balance even if it?s any early morning flight.

2. Look for healthy options at the airport
If you have a layover and have time to eat at the airport. Search out the healthy options. They?re there. I?m vegan which makes it a lot more difficult, but is doable. Look for the stand that has fresh fruit, and breakfast options. Have an egg sandwich on wheat minus the cheese and bacon, and avoid the white bagel.

3. Stay hydrated
It?s important to drink water when you?re traveling to keep your body in balance. Instead of using coffee to keep you going, drink plenty of water and hot herbal tea. By eliminating the coffee (which dehydrates you) and fancy coffee drinks that are loaded with sugar, you?ll have more energy and a better attitude to deal with any little travel issues that may present themselves.

4. Be selective at restaurants and hotels
It is easy to eat healthy in most restaurants and hotels. The trick I learned years ago is to look for the a la carte menu items.? You can get poached eggs with fruit or wheat toast instead of a fat-filled breakfast of bacon, a cinnamon roll and scrambled eggs with cream and cheese in them. Most hotels and restaurants have oatmeal which you can order (minus the brown sugar) with fruit and yogurt for a nicely balanced breakfast.

For lunch order a nice salad with baked or grilled turkey, chicken or fish?and ask for olive oil and fresh lemon on the side for your dressing. At dinner request a baked potato plain (it?s really tasty) ask for salsa if you need something to excite your potato taste buds. Request your vegetables steamed vs. slathered in butter. Order lean protein (broiled or grilled fish, chicken or turkey breast) to round out your meal. Skip the dessert. If you?re in the mood for something sweet, ask for fruit and enjoy with some hot herbal decaf tea. Notice how you feel the next day when you wake up.

5. Avoid or limit alcohol
If you have cocktails before dinner or have alcohol with your meal limit it to 1-2 glasses. Remember that wine has a high level of sugar and those empty carbohydrates and calories quickly add up and beer?well they don?t call them beer bellies for nothing. If you?re goal is to lose or maintain your weight, order something white like vodka or gin and mix with cranberry, orange or grapefruit juice instead of soda.

By using these strategies you can remain alert, feel good and have fun throwing your goals for a?healthy lifestyle out the window. If you decide to splurg on something, keep it to one meal and get back on your healthly lifestyle?goals the next meal. When you?return home, you?ll feel great knowing you honored your commitment to taking care of yourself.

Better Money Management With These Personal Finance Tips

Any extra money each month should be used to pay off debts or put into savings.

Credit cards are a fantastic alternative to using a debit card. You can use your credit cards on daily purchases, like food or gas. Unlike debit cards, these purchases can often earn you rewards, and sometimes even cash back.

When you receive your paycheck and quickly learn that the money is all gone once you have paid for your expenses, search for the non-essentials that you could cut back, without completely eliminating them. For example, if you stop going out to dinner entirely, you probably cannot sustain this change for very long. You can still enjoy eating out and save quite a bit of money by changing your habits to eat out half as much as you used to.

Have 2 different savings accounts; one that you can dip into on a rainy day, and one that is strictly for emergencies. Perhaps you have a specific aim in mind that you wish to save money for, such as attending college or a down payment for your own home.

Carry an envelope with you at all times. Use an envelope to put all of your cards and receipts in. This way you can ensure you have all the documents you need for your records. This way, you can compare your receipts to your monthly credit card statement, to ensure that all the charges are correct.

You may not know it, but when you pay full price, you are paying too much. It is time to stop shopping without thinking and start comparing prices among the brands, don?t just purchase the same old one which is more expensive. Also, keep an eye out for coupons to get an even better bargain. If you have found no difference in quality or performance between two different brand name items, buy the one you have the coupon for if that will result in the greatest savings!

Small changes can have a big impact on your budget. Stop going to the convince store or fancy coffee shop for your morning coffee, and make your own. The savings are endless if you consider the many things you buy that you do not need. Instead of driving your car to work, which will reduce wear on your car and prices on fuel, take the bus. That saves you money on gas and car maintenance. Small savings will add up over time, and you can be saving that money for retirement, or a big item that you want to purchase. Those things are certainly more important than a coffeehouse brew.

Don?t let your personal finances get to you, clear your head, and realize it is time for you to tackle the issues. The article has provided you with the information you need to get on the right track, so apply this information to your personal finances and you will make a difference.

Samsung demos new 32nm quad-core Exynos ahead of MWC

If you were lucky enough to be at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference, then you might have caught a glimpse of Samsung's latest sliver of mobile silicon. The as yet unnamed Exynos parts will come in dual- and quad-core configurations running at up to 1.5GHz. Perhaps the most important change though, is the switch from a 45nm manufacturing process to 32nm. That means smaller parts that draw less power, while delivering better performance. The A9 cores are paired with Sammy's own GPU, an OpenGL ES 2.0-capable chip with four pixel processors. According to the company, the new CPUs deliver a 26 percent boost in performance and up to a 50 percent increase in battery life. Of course, we'll have to wait to run our own benchmarks to confirm that lofty claim. Who knows, maybe we'll see it show up in some phones at MWC.

Quran burning: What is the respectful way to dispose of Islam's holy book?

Thousands protested today the burning of Qurans and other religious texts at a US military base in Afghanistan.?

Thousands of protesters rallied outside the Bagram military base in Afghanistan today after NATO and US officials reportedly burned Qurans, the Muslim holy text. The Qurans, along with other books, were removed from a library at a nearby detention center reportedly due to extremist messages penned inside the books and exchanged among detainees, reports the Associated Press. US and NATO representatives apologized and promised an investigation into the event.

The burning of the Quran has?angered Afghans in the past, sparking deadly protests in 2010 and 2011. But if discarding a Quran is necessary, there are respectful and acceptable ways to do so, scholars say.

It is important to give a Quran a proper burial, says Omid Safi, professor of Islamic studies at the University of North Carolina and author of ?Memories of Muhammad.? Any text containing ?the name of God is sacred in Islam. God is revealed through scripture, and anything associated with writing it has a religious significance, Mr. Safi says.

One could literally bury the Quran, ideally in a place with little foot traffic. Another option is to put the book in a flowing body of water, either letting it sink or be carried away. Regardless of the method, treating the book?s destruction with respect is paramount. Safi likens it to a poor man?s funeral, where the book might be wrapped in a shroud before being placed in the ground and mourned.

Burning the Quran, however, is also an accepted practice.

?People often ask, ?if it?s OK for Muslims to burn the Quran, then why isn?t it OK for the US military to do it??? Safi says. ?That?s where the question of symbolism is important.?

Some say erasing the names of God and his messengers prior to burning the Quran makes it acceptable, but Safi says it?s even simpler than that. It comes down to context: Burning the text in a dumpster with trash on a US military base feels less respectful than treating the disposal with reverence in a burial or sacred burning.?

Safi finds one analogy particularly helpful: The Quran is to Islam as Jesus is to Christianity. ?In an Islamic universe ... the word becomes not a person, but a book,? he says. ?For a Muslim to see the Quran burnt not as a way of burial, it would look and feel like someone burning Jesus, or a crucifix.?

But contextualizing today?s protests goes beyond simple reverence for the Quran, Safi says. ?Bagram airbase is one of the central places of US military presence in Afghanistan ... [and] between 600 and 700 Afghans have been detained or are being detained there for years and years.? ?

Safi says this isn?t so much a theological debate on how to dispose of the Quran properly, but a charged conversation around a military force ?that?s being looked at as an occupying force ... [A]n unlawful, violent force.?

HP Compaq 8200 Elite All-in-One PC

The HP Compaq 8200 Elite All-in-one PC ($1,859 direct) is a quad-core powered, large screen business desktop PC. It has an intelligent yet sedate design, good performance numbers, and would be a good fit for your space-constrained line workers who need just a bit more performance and screen room. It's a little pricey, especially considering that you can get systems with a few more bells an whistles for less money. Ultimately is the 8200 Elite is a decent choice if your business already has a buy contract for HP Compaq 8200 Elite PCs, but consider a lower-clocked processor to lock in a better price.

Design and Features
The 8200 Elite has the same design ID as previous business all-in-one desktops, similar to but distinct from HP systems like the Editor's Choice winning HP Omni 220-1080qd ($999.99 direct, 4.5 stars). The 8200 Elite has a basic black motif, with glossy and matte finish panels all over. It's built into an easel-style chassis, with a simple stand and a single hinge attached to the back panel so you can tilt the screen to your liking. The system's speakers are built below the screen, perfectly placed for kiosk or reception desk use. The screen chassis floats above the system's stand, similar to the HP Omni and Apple iMac systems, so there's a handy spot below the screen to stow your keyboard. The desktop includes a 1.3MP webcam for video conferencing. The only other notable feature on the front panel is the power button.

The left hand side of the 8200 Elite is where you'll find two USB 2.0 ports, audio, and a 6-in-1 card reader (mainly variants of SD and Memory Stick). The right side has the system's tray-loading DVD drive, drive activity light, and brightness controls. The HP Compaq 8200 Elite is a decent system with a large 23-inch screen, but there are other choices that may make more sense. The HP 9300 is actually a better buy, since it is more ergonomic, and comes with slightly better performance, more memory, a larger hard drive, and a touch screen for about $300 less. The 8200 Elite does have a less expensive ($1,149) Core i5 model that's got a better bang for the buck, but the Core i7 model here is a bit pricey overall. The 8200 Elite is likely to fit better in your corporate structure than the HP 9300 Elite, thanks to 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi with 5GHz support and its three-year warranty. The Edge 91z is a smaller machine with a 21-inch screen and commensurate lower price tag ($1,286), but it's still competitive with the other systems on the benchmark tests. Ultimately the HP Compaq 8200 Elite All in One is a good choice if you've already rolled out other HP Compaq 8200 Elite desktops in your business, but ultimately there are other choices out there than this particular configuration.

You are a self published author, tell us what your book is called and what is it about?

I?ve self published several of my books that we?re initially published by major publishers. Right now I self publish Filling the Glass: The Skeptic?s Guide to Positive Thinking in Business, No Lie: Truth Is the Ultimate Sales Tool and the niche book, Getting the Most from Your Yellow Pages Advertising.

Tell us a little bit about your writing process? What methods do you use to write and how did you make it through the grueling process of writing your book?

To me, writing is a business. I get up in the morning sometime between 6:00 and 7:00 AM put my butt in the chair in front of the computer and write until I find a good stopping point sometime between 5:00 and 6:00 PM, breaking of course for breakfast and lunch.

Explain to us the process you took to get your book published, from formatting your manuscript to preparing it for print all the way to getting an ISBN and the book cover design.

Since my books were originally published by major publishers, the process for me was rather simple. Once I got back the rights, I simply purchased new ISBNs, entered the original files in QUARK, revised and updated the manuscript (using a vendor for the artwork and cover), then submitted all the files to Lighting Source., which handles the printing and the distribution.

Did you use the services of a book coach or a self publishing company to help you though the process or did you do it yourself? Tell us about your experiences.

I didn?t use a book coach. But the people at Lighting Source were extremely helpful. And of course all the books had been professionally edited by the original publishers. I just had to make sure I didn?t screw anything up during the revisions.

What would you do differently with the publishing of your next book?

I?d pay more attention to the marketing even before I started to write the book.

How did you market your book? Can you share some of your creative/non-conventional ways/secrets on how you sold your book?

My marketing isn?t very non-conventional. Social media of course as well as articles, print interviews, TV and radio appearances, bulk sales to my speaking clients and, when the client doesn?t purchase in bulk, individual sales at speaking engagements.

Share with us the different platforms you use to sell your book (bookstores, signing, affiliate programs, website etc.).

I don?t do signings at bookstores anymore, though I still do signings at speaking engagements which is quite lucrative. My books are distributed through Ingram of course so they can be purchased through stores and at various online sites. I don?t want to bother with fulfillment so sales through my own website are simply done through amazon.com.

Do you use social media in book promotion, and if so, which platforms work best for you? Can you share some tricks you got making it work for you?

I use social media and it?s getting more effective every day, though so far it hasn?t surpassed the pop I get out of more traditional PR.

Care to share some numbers? How many books have you sold to date?

I?ve got books that have been in print for 25 years, with various foreign editions. I honestly have no idea how many books I?ve sold.

How was your book initially received? Has it been reviewed? What was your response to the reviews?

Luckily, all my books have been well reviewed. Dearborn did a particular good job with Filling the Glass which was cited as ?[One of] The Seven Essential Popular Business Books? and one of the Ten Top Books for CEOs in the year it was released. I like good reviews but they never take the place of the constant hard work of marketing the book.

How do you handle negative feedback from critics?

I was actually rather severely attacked by a well known blogger over, of all things, a press release for the third edition of my book, Getting the Most from Your Yellow Pages Advertising, which was the first edition I?d self published. As a niche book for a specialized market, it had a retail price of $69.95 and basically the blogger took exception to a quote from TIME raving about the book.

He said he?d never heard of me and that the quote was probably fake. Fortunately, a number of people, one of them from as far away as India, who were familiar with my work and the earlier editions rushed to my defense. Luckily the blogger had the integrity to apologize. After reading the book, he even wrote a glowing review.

Where are some of the places where you sell your book besides through book distributors, your website, book stores etc.

As I mentioned, speaking engagement generate a great many sales both bulk and individual.

Do have any future projects you?d like to tell us about?

I?m mulling around a couple of ideas for what will probably be my first book written to be self published. But I?ll be doing a lot of market research before I decide on which one of them to pursue.

California economy to slowly improve in 2012: study (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? California's economy, the biggest in the United States and the ninth-largest in the world, will see a slight improvement in 2012 but a recovery in the crucial housing market is at least two years away, according to a report released on Wednesday.

California was one of states hardest hit by the 2007-2009 recession and will continue to lag national economic indicators as the national picture improves, says the report by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC).

Overall, the report forecasts that California will see economic growth of 1.5 percent this year, and will add 200,000 jobs, with the unemployment rate averaging 11.1 percent.

That compares with a national average today of 8.3 percent unemployment, down from 9.1 percent in January 2011.

The Californian economy "will continue to heal but the process is uncomfortably long," the report says. Unemployment will still be at 10.3 percent in 2013, according to the LAEDC, a nonprofit economic development organization.

The leading economic sectors in 2012 will be the booming technology sector centered around companies such as Google and Facebook in Silicon Valley, tourism, international trade and the entertainment industry.

But the crisis-hit housing sector in California, although expected to see some improvement, is still a long way from full recovery, the study says.

Southern California was particularly hard hit by the collapse in the housing market and the financial crash of 2008, with an epidemic of foreclosures. Even today, 44 percent of homeowners in the region owe more on their mortgages than their homes are worth.

"As the calendar turned to 2012, the timeline for recovery in the housing market continued to be measured in years and not in months," the report says.

BUYERS WANTED

A huge backlog of foreclosed homes that have yet to be sold continues to depress house prices, which increases the number of mortgage holders with negative equity. In 2011 home prices in California actually fell compared to 2010.

"To date, rock-bottom mortgage interest rates and good affordability have not been enough to entice buyers back to the market," the report states.

"What happens in 2012 will depend on how fast lenders work through their foreclosure files."

In addition, the report says, "tighter mortgage lending standards and fundamentals such as slow job growth and flagging consumer confidence have dampened demand" in the housing sector.

The LAEDC forecasts a better housing market for California in 2012 but with significant risks remaining, especially if job growth fails to accelerate. Foreclosures and negative equity "remain significant hurdles to recovery," it adds.

The Californian economy is so large that its performance is inextricably linked to the national and global economies, the reports says.

California has fallen from eighth to ninth in the list of the world's largest economies, behind Brazil and Italy, but still ahead of India, Canada, Russia, Spain and Australia, according to the study.
