When Do You Stop Calling Someone an Evangelical?

Terry Mattingly raises an interesting question at the excellent GetReligion blog: When do we stop calling someone evangelical? ?And who decides?

The occasion for the question is Brian McLaren?s action, shortly after his son?s same-sex wedding ceremony (officiated by a Universal Life minister), to conduct ?a commitment ceremony with traditional Christian elements for family and friends.? ?Terry does not draw a line in the sand, and ? before everyone attacks him ? he does not do so over the issue of homosexuality and gay marriage. ?I think it?s fairer to say that the story reminded Terry of the fact that McLaren has drifted further and further away from distinctively evangelical theological commitments. ?Now, given that this was McLaren?s son, I don?t want to touch that particular case with a ten-foot pole. ?If my daughter were determined to marry a person of the same sex and she wanted me, in spite of my objections, to offer a private service with some religious elements?boy, it would be tough to say no.

So let?s put the McLaren example aside.

Some suggest that self-identification is the only definition available to evangelicals, in the absence of a Pope or a teaching magisterium. ?If a person calls himself an evangelical, who are you to say otherwise? ?Well, I don?t think that?s true. ?My Pagan friend Star Foster ? not that she would want to, of course ? could not simply decide to call herself evangelical and we would all have to throw up our hands and say, ?Well, nothing for it, I guess. ?If she says she?s an evangelical, she?s an evangelical. ?Wish we had a Pope!? ?That would be ludicrous.

There have been various attempts to provide a clearer definition of evangelicalism, from the famous Bebbington Quadrilateral to pseudo-creeds like the Lausanne Covenant. ?I just want to make three points:

1. There?s nothing inherently oppressive or intolerant or authoritarian in seeking to identify who is an evangelical and who is not. ?The Jews, for instance, have clear terms of definition. ?If they did not, they would not have survived as a people for so many centuries. ?Similarly, any group that wishes to maintain some semblance of coherence over time will need, so to speak, to patrol its borders. ?That means examining boundary cases, cases that challenge you to formulate a more precise definition. ?If the purpose of my existence were to spew gasoline into America?s streams and bays, I could not stand up and call myself an environmentalist and expect no one to contradict me.
2. This is a particularly acute question for evangelical seminaries. ?This nation has seen countless Christian institutions of higher learning that have, over time, lost their Christian character. ?Evangelicals have shown a lamentable eagerness to discover the latent heresies in Christian college and seminary faculty, to make mountains out of molehills and drive people from their jobs for minor theological transgressions. ?But I cannot fault the general desire to cultivate a faculty that reflects the fundamental convictions of the institution. ?It should be done with sensitivity, slowly, through hiring and not firing (in my view), except in extreme cases. ?Countless Christian colleges and seminaries today are trying to find a way to be broad-minded and yet well-defined, to cultivate a Christian character without patrolling a rigid orthodoxy. ?It?s not a simple matter. ?On the one hand, some institutions and individuals (Mike Licona is one victim of such) can become over-zealous, backwards and so closed-minded that their institutions can no longer be places of true inquiry. ?On the other hand, angry faculty do not help matters when they overreact to administrators who dare to ask theological questions and seek to maintain some sense of theological integrity in their community.
3. I am particularly leery of definitions of ?evangelical? that focus on political or social positions. ?While it?s true that evangelicals are generally inclined, for instance, to oppose abortion and support the traditional marriage covenant, there are interpretations and extensions of their fundamental commitments and not fundamental commitments themselves. ?I?ve heard it before: ?I don?t know how someone can be an evangelical and pro-choice.? ?Well, you?re going to have to trust me here: it can be done. ?Bebbington shows the way by focusing on essential theological matters.
4. Finally, saying that Person P is not an evangelical is not at all?the same as saying that P is not Christian or does not have a saving relationship with God in Christ. ?If I were to say that P is not an evangelical, that?s not intended as an insult or exclusion. ?It?s not to say that P is wrong or unrighteous, an enemy or unwelcome. ?It?s merely an observation of what evangelicalism means and an observation of whether or not P comports with that definition. ?A community that does not define what is holds essential will not survive as a community for long.

Germany wins 1st mixed-gender swim relay in Dubai

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ? Stroke by stroke, they were coming after her. Britta Steffen of Germany had the lead, but it was quickly shrinking, with two elite male swimmers in pursuit.

But on this day ? when top-level swimming featured its first male vs. female racing ? Steffen made sure it was ladies first.

She held off the fast-charging men from Hungary and Ukraine to anchor her country to victory in a 4x50-meter medley relay at a short-course World Cup meet. She was embraced by smiling teammates as she jumped out of the pool.

"I only wanted to give my best and I did," she said.

Germany gambled by putting Steffen ? a world record-holder in the 50 freestyle ? on the final leg. But it proved a successful tactic when her teammates gave her a lead of half a pool length. Hungary's Krisztian Takacs and Ukraine's Sergii Frolov closed the gap, but Steffen guided Germany home by a comfortable margin.

Germany finished in 1 minute, 43.21 seconds ? 2.10 seconds faster than Hungary. Ukraine was another 0.58 seconds back.

"It's enjoyable and good team building," said Steffen, surrounded by her three teammates before they received a gold medal. "It was also good to see what I can do under pressure against the men."

A mixed freestyle relay is scheduled for Wednesday, the last day of the two-day meet.

The mixed relays feature two men and two women on each team. The format is being introduced at all eight World Cup meets this season in what swimming's governing body says is an attempt to move the sport forward. If these relays prove successful, FINA executive director Cornel Marculescu said they could be part of the short-course world championship in December.

Unlike mixed relays in some other sports, like biathlon, the swim teams can put the women in any of the four legs. That provides plenty of lead changes and adds an extra element of drama, making it difficult to tell which team actually has the edge at any point.

"It was really fun especially since some of the guys were swimming against all girls and some of the girls against guys," Hungary's Katinka Hosszu said. "I think it will be more interesting because you never know if a team has a guy and the other team has a girl and the guy can easily catch her. The race will change faster."

Sweden and Hungary ? led by male swimmers Simon Sjoedin and Olympic bronze medalist Laszlo Cseh ? got off to the early lead, with Jenny Mensing swimming the first leg for Germany. But Germany's decision to hand the next two legs to Marco Koch and Helge Meeuw paid off as they opened a huge lead with one leg left.

Still, the race was far from over.

With the poolside announcer urging the swimmers chasing Steffen, the crowd stood and cheered. Steffen's lead quickly shrank. Takacs appeared to have a chance at catching her, but he just ran out of pool.

The addition of the mixed relay comes as swimming looks for ways to maintain interest in the sport following a hugely successful London Olympics.

Critics, however, contend this goes too far in a bid to raise the sport's profile. European Swimming Federation President Paolo Barelli has said there already are plenty of stars to fill the stands at top swimming competitions. Some swimmers wonder about the merits of adding another event to an already crowded meet schedule.

Germany's Meeuw said he enjoyed it even though it was hard for him to keep track of the leaders. A lead of several meters could quickly disappear depending on whether a team had a woman or a man going in a particular leg.

"You were confused in the middle of the race because it's shifting all around," Meeuw said. "You completely lose where you are, but it was fun. It was the first time we did this and the results were good."

Champions League Group G: Conservative Barca?

One of the subtly great things Russia brings to UEFA Champions League is staggered start times. The country is so far east, group stage kickoffs on Russian soil get an early kickoff: 12:00 p.m. Eastern. So thanks to the miracle of Russian geography, we get a Group G doubleheader: Spartak-Celtic the undercard for the main event in Lisbon.

Imagine Barcelona. Xavi has the ball. He?s just inside the opponents half. You follow his eye line as he scans the field. Messi?s in front of him. Iniesta is slightly to his left. Pedro and Fabregas are floating around. There?s Alves way over on the right. And the defense ? that generic, let?s try to absorb this onslaught-defense ? is bracing for what Xavi?s about to ignite.

That?s the default approach to Barcelona, though it?s difficult to imagine Benfica fully employing it. It?s just not the kind of blind pragmatism we tend to see from the Eagles, though with no Barcelona in the Portuguese league, they?re given very few chances to do so. The last time Benfica met the real deal, Frank Rijkaard was still patrolling Bar?a?s sidelines.

Undoubtedly, Benfica will play more conservatively that they normally do, likely playing 4-2-3-1 (with leading scorer Oscar Cardozo out injured) instead of the 4-4-2 they?ve use in league. Still, given the team?s style and personnel, it?s hard to envision them driving a bus onto the pitch of the Est?dio da Luz.

And that?s not necessarily a bad thing. Four years ago, when Pep Guardiola replaced Rijkaard, teams tended to play Bar?a more straight up. The result was a 105-goal season (and a title), though Barcelona lost five times. Since, only Real Madrid has tried to match Barcelona blow-for-blow, an approach that?s only managed to topple the Catalans six times in 120 league matches. Even the 19 draws represent a lower rate than during Guardiola?s first season (when Bar?a shared points six times). What exactly are the passive tactics accomplishing?

There are three possibilities.

• First, coaches believe it gives their team its best chance to succeed, however limited those odds may be. The numbers may not bear that out, but a coaches don?t always agree with the numbers.
• Second, at least the coach can say he?s trying to contain Barcelona. Playing your normal game against such a talented squad could be perceived as throwing your hands in the air and saying If we?re going to lose, we?re doing it our way. And don?t underestimate a CYA mentality.
• Third, the strategy may be more likely to prevent embarrassment, containing Barcelona?s attack rather than trying to offset it.

?

The psychological part of that last factor is important. Depending on a team?s state of mind, a coach might view it better in the long term to accept a 1-0 or 2-0 loss rather than risk a disaster while going for a win. For Benfica ? a team that won?t have their leading scorer and is still working to adjust to life without Javi Garc?a and Axel Witsel ? containment may not be the worst option. If Benfica even has it in them.

Given Benfica?s midfield transition, Celtic?s home game on matchday one may have been their best chance to get a win from this group. They didn?t take advantage, though they did manage more points (one) than shots on goal (zero).

Conversely, Spartak is coming off their most difficult match of the group, a trip to the Nou Camp where they managed to carry a 2-1 lead into the last 20 minutes. A late Lionel Messi double sent them home empty handed after a 3-2 loss. For Unai Emery?s team, the worst is not only behind them, it gave them something to build on.

It?s unclear why Celtic would have more success against Spartak than Benfica. True, they could just play better, but there are a number of other factors conspiring against them. With Benfica in transition, Spartak may be the better team right now. Celtic?s also making the long trip from Glasgow to Moscow to play on the plastic stuff at Russia?s national stadium.

If Celtic has one thing going for them, it?s an uptick in form, one that started with the Benfica result. On returning to league play, celtic downed Dundee before registering an important 2-0 away win over Motherwell, the biggest threat to Celtic?s title. Based on league results, there?s reason to think the Bhoys will be better than they were two weeks ago.

Spartak, however, will have to slip in order to open the door. The talent gap between the two teams is just too big. With the possible exception of goalkeeper, all of Emery?s starters would displace their Celtic counterparts were they handed a ticket to Glasgow.

Prep Boys Golf: Boylan wins NIC-10 crown with perfect score

ROCKFORD ? Hononegah showed it can golf with Boylan for one day.

So did Freeport. Especially Adama Werntz.

But no one could play with Boylan all season.

The Titans finished with a perfect score in the second year of the new scoring system to determine the NIC-10 boys golf champion. Boylan finished with 27 points by winning all nine conference duals and beating every school in both days of the NIC-10 tournament at Sandy Hollow Friday and Saturday.

?We played consistently good over the whole season,? said sophomore Kyle Slattery, who led Boylan by shooting 74-79?153, to finish second for medalist honors, three strokes behind Werntz.

Slattery was tied with Werntz with three holes to go.

?The pressure got to me,? Slattery said. ?I knew I needed to par out, but I finished bogey, bogey, bogey. But?s I?ve got two more years to go.?

Boylan?s Danny Gorman, the conference favorite, was tied with Slattery for the first day lead with a 74 but shot 81 Saturday.

?As a team we?re all excited to bring home the conference championship, but me and Kyle put ourselves in position to win but didn?t follow through,? Gorman said. ?It was the worst round of the year for me. It kind of stinks to do it in the conference championship with it all on the line, but as a team we can?t be disappointed at all. We did what we needed to do.?

Werntz had the opposite feeling Gorman did. He wanted to win last year, when the tourney was on Freeport?s home course of Park Hills.

?I was very disappointed with my finish last year,? Werntz said.

And his start this year.

?I worked over the winter. I worked very early in the spring and all summer. My whole goal was to win this tournament,? Werntz said.

?This means everything. My goal my senior year was to be conference MVP, but in the regular season, I didn?t have the season I wanted. I knew I?d have to win this to have a chance.?

Boylan dominated Friday, shooting 312 to finish 17 strokes better than Harlem. Auburn also surprised Friday with a third-place finish. That put Hononegah and Freeport, who finished fourth and fifth after being second and third in duals, out of the running, but the Indians bounced back Saturday and finished second and third overall. Boylan shot 321 Saturday, Hononegah 322 and Freeport 324.

?It was disheartening Friday,? Hononegah coach Harrison Hearne said. ?We thought we could chase Boylan. We know Boylan is a better team than us, but we don?t think they are a much better team than us. ... It was nice to see the kids come back and play well.?
