Iran's navy tests cruise missile as part of drill (AP)
TEHRAN, Iran ? Iran test-fired a surface-to-surface cruise missile on Monday during a drill that the country's navy chief said proved Tehran was in complete control of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, the passageway for one-sixth of the world's oil supply.
The missile, called Ghader, or Capable in Farsi, was described as an upgraded version of a missile that has been in service before. The official IRNA news agency said the missile "successfully hit its intended target" during the exercise.
No other details were released about Ghader. An earlier version of the same cruise missile had a range of 124 miles (200 kilometers) and could travel at low altitudes. There were suggestions it could counter the U.S. naval presence in the Persian Gulf.
Iran's 10-day navy drill, which ends Tuesday, was Tehran's latest show of strength in the face of mounting international criticism over its nuclear program. The exercise came amid conflicting comments from Iranian officials over Tehran's intentions to close the Strait of Hormuz, and U.S. warnings against such an ominous move.
"The Strait of Hormuz is completely under our control," Iran's navy chief Adm. Habibollah Sayyari said after Monday's test. "We do not allow any enemy to pose threats to our interests."
The latest version of the Ghader was delivered in September to the naval division of Iran's Revolutionary Guard, which is assigned to protect Iranian sea borders. At the time, Tehran said the missile is capable of destroying warships.
"In comparison with the previous version, the highly advanced Ghader missile system has been upgraded in terms of its radar, satellite communications, precision in target destruction, as well as range and radar-evading mechanism," said Rear Adm. Mahmoud Mousavi, a spokesman for the drill.
State TV showed footage Monday depicting the launch of two missiles, which were fired into the sky and which the TV said could hit targets "hundreds of kilometers (miles) away" from the point of origin. The broadcast said two more missiles, with a shorter range, were also tested Monday.
"We conducted the drill ... to let everybody know that Iran's defense and deterrence powers on the open seas and the Strait of Hormuz are aimed at defending our borders, resources and our nation," said Sayyari, the navy chief.
The testing comes a day after Iran test-fired an advanced surface-to-air missile called Mehrab, or Altar in Farsi, which was described as medium-range.
Iran had said the sea maneuvers would cover a 1,250-mile (2,000-kilometer) stretch of water beyond the Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, as well as parts of the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden.
A leading Iranian lawmaker said Sunday the maneuvers served as practice for closing the Strait of Hormuz if the West blocks Iran's oil sales. After top Iranian officials made the same threat a week ago, military commanders emphasized that Iran has no intention of blocking the waterway now.
Mousavi on Sunday also emphasized that Iran has no plan to choke the strait. "We won't disrupt traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. We are not after this," the semiofficial ISNA news agency quoted him as saying.
Mousavi said the drill was "tactical" and meant to show Iran was capable of assuming full control over the strait in case this became necessary.
The West fears Iran's program aims to develop atomic weapons ? a charge Tehran denies, insisting it's for peaceful purposes only.

MAME Arcade Game Emulator Now Available For Google Chrome
The Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator port for iOS lasted only a matter of hours on Apple's App Store. That was sad. But don't fret: MAME has now been successfully ported to Google Chrome, too.
MAME emulates classic arcade games: everything from Pac-Man to Burger Time. Of course, many of the ROMs you need to be able to play games like that are copyrighted ? so if you want to play Galaga then it's dubiously legal. But if you worry about things like that, there are free games which you can play without breaking any law.
Anyway, as for the Chrome port, you have Google engineer Robert Muth to thank for carefully working out how to get it running. He also posted a detailed case study of the challenges he faced along the way in the four-day project.
But you probably want to play some games, right? So you should head over to the Chrome Web Store and install the classic Robby Roto arcade game. That's one of the copyright-free games we're all entitled to play. Once you've gotten that, though, you can upload any MAME ROMs you happen to, uh, "find" and play them through Chrome. Sweet. In the interview, Steve Wozniak and the late Steve Jobs recall a seminal moment in Silicon Valley history ? how they named their upstart computer company some 35 years ago. ?I remember driving down Highway 85,? Wozniak says. ?We?re on the freeway, and Steve mentions, ?I?ve got a name: Apple Computer.? We kept thinking of other alternatives to that name, and we couldn?t think of anything better.? Adds Jobs: ?And also remember that I worked at Atari, and it got us ahead of Atari in the phone book.? The interview, recorded for an in-house video for company employees in the mid-1980s, was among a storehouse of materials Apple had been collecting for a company museum. But in 1997, soon after Jobs returned to the company, Apple officials contacted Stanford University and offered to donate the collection to the school?s Silicon Valley Archives. Within a few days, Stanford curators were at Apple headquarters in nearby Cupertino, packing two moving trucks full of documents, books, software, videotapes and marketing materials that now make up the core of Stanford?s Apple Collection. The collection, the largest assembly of Apple historical materials, can help historians, entrepreneurs and policymakers understand how a startup launched in a Silicon Valley garage became a global technology giant. The collection is stored in hundreds of boxes taking up more than 600 feet of shelf space at the Stanford?s off-campus storage facility. The Associated Press visited the climate-controlled warehouse on the outskirts of the San Francisco Bay area but agreed not to disclose its location. Interest in Apple and its founder has grown dramatically since Jobs died in October at age 56, just weeks after he stepped down as CEO and handed the reins to Tim Cook. Jobs? death sparked an international outpouring and marked the end of an era for Apple and Silicon Valley. ?Apple as a company is in a very, very select group,? said Stanford curator Henry Lowood. ?It survived through multiple generations of technology. To the credit of Steve Jobs, it meant reinventing the company at several points.? Apple scrapped its own plans for a corporate museum after Jobs returned as CEO and began restructuring the financially struggling firm, Lowood said. Job?s return, more than a decade after he was forced out of the company he co-founded, marked the beginning of one of the great comebacks in business history. It led to a long string of blockbuster products ? including the iPod, iPhone and iPad ? that have made Apple one of the world?s most profitable brands.

NFL Week 17: Indianapolis Colts (2-13) at Jacksonville Jaguars (4-11)
So why are we previewing a totally meaningless game between Indianapolis and Jacksonville, two teams who have combined for six wins? Because of Andrew Luck. The Colts will get the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft if they lose and the chance to take Luck ? thus that could mean the end of Peyton Manning?s Hall of Fame career in Indy. The Colts also would get the top pick if they win and the Rams somehow upset San Francisco.
Two consecutive wins after an 0-13 start have left Indianapolis tied with St. Louis for the worst record in the league in the race for Luck. If the Colts and Rams finish tied, Indianapolis would ?win? the rights to the No. 1 pick in April?s draft based on the lower opposition winning percentage. Colts players have insisted they will play to win the game. Win or lose, Jacksonville is assured of a pick in the top eight.
Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew enters the game leading the league with 1,437 yards rushing, 128 ahead of LeSean McCoy. Jones-Drew has a good chance to secure his first career rushing title against the Colts? 29th-ranked run defense. He rushed for 114 yards and a TD in Jacksonville?s 17-3 win over Indianapolis in Week 10. If he does win the rushing title, Jones-Drew would become just the second player since 1995 to lead the league in rushing while having the NFL?s worst passing offense. Baltimore?s Jamal Lewis also did it in 2003.
As losers of five of their last six, there hasn?t been much to cheer about lately for the Jaguars. A win and a rushing title for Jones-Drew would be a pleasant send-off for outgoing owner Wayne Weaver, who officially hands control of the team over to Shahid Khan on Jan. 4.
Is this the final game in a Colts uniform for veteran mainstays WR Reggie Wayne, C Jeff Saturday and DE Robert Mathis? Each is in the final year of his contract, and a roster overhaul could be in the works after the Colts? worst season in over a decade. Wayne, who is 113 yards shy of his eighth consecutive 1,000-yard season, is second in franchise history in receptions (854), receiving yards (11,635) and TD catches (73). Mathis is second on the Colts? all-time sack list with 82.5. Saturday is fifth in Colts history with 196 games played.
