Pentax K-01

The Pentax K-01 ($899.95 direct with 40mm lens) is a bit of a departure in concept when compared with other compact interchangeable lens cameras. Rather than design a new lens mount, Pentax opted to use the same bayonet K mount that it has used since 1975. Because of this, the K-01 is closer in size to a D-SLR than other mirrorless compacts. In terms of size, it's the complete opposite of Pentax's first foray into the category, the very small Pentax Q ($799.95, 3 stars), a cute camera that packed a sensor identical in size to those found in most point-and-shoots. The K-01 uses a 16-megapixel APS-C sensor, the same size as the one found in the company's D-SLRs and our Editors' Choice for this category, the Sony Alpha NEX-C3 ($649.99, 4.5 stars).

Design and Features
Pentax enlisted renowned designer Mark Newson to sketch out the K-01 and the results are interesting. The body is constructed of metal, but features a rubberized grip, which is available in Newson's signature bright yellow.?The camera has a very boxy feel, but the buttons and dials are all in the right places.?

The camera measures 3.1 by 4.8 by 2.3 inches (HWD) and weighs 19.8 ounces, not that much smaller than the entry-level Pentax K-r ($699.95, 3 stars) D-SLR, which is 3.8 by 4.9 by 2.7 inches in size and just 21 ounces. Because the K-01 has a native D-SLR lens mount, the distance between the lens and the image sensor must be equal to that of a camera with a mirror?making the distance shorter would prevent lenses from being able to focus properly. Pentax includes the new DA 40mm f/2.8 XS lens (60mm equivalent), a slimmer, less-expensive version of the highly regarded DA 40mm f/2.8 Limited lens ($499.95). The XS lens, which is also designed by Newson, barely protrudes from the body, giving it the feel of being part of the camera rather than being attached to it. If you already have the DA 40mm lens, which is also quite slim, consider getting the K-01 as a body only for $749.95, and if you're a Pentax user that is interested in the slimline XS version of the 40mm more than the K-01, you'll be happy to know that it is available separately for only $249.95.

The other side of Pentax's decision to include the pancake prime as the standard kit lens for the K-01 is one of practicality?a 40mm lens doesn't give you any sort of zoom, and it isn't suitable for wide angle scenes. Most mirrorless cameras, including the very compact Olympus PEN E-PM1 ($499.99, 4 stars), ship with a 3x zoom lens that covers about a 28-85mm field of view. If you already own a Pentax D-SLR, you'll be able to mount your existing 18-55mm (27.5-82.5mm equivalent) zoom lens to the K-01, but the perfect second lens for the camera may be the wide-angle DA 21mm f/3.2 AL Limited ($649.95 direct), which produces a classic 30mm wide-angle perspective on APS-C cameras.

The K-01 doesn't have a built-in electronic viewfinder, nor does it have the option to add one as you can with the Sony Alpha NEX-5N ($699.99, 4.5 stars). This is complicated by the fixed rear LCD. The 920k-dot display is very bright and crisp, and when you activate the Focus Peaking feature it makes it easy to verify focus and use legacy manual focus glass with the camera, but it doesn't tilt. Unless you're working with a tripod, this leaves you with a camera that you are almost required to hold like a point-and-shoot?with your arms extended far enough away from your face for you to properly frame an image. You can shoot with cameras that feature articulating rear screens, like the Olympus PEN E-PL3 ($699.99, 3.5 stars), from the hip as you would with a classic medium format camera with a waist-level finder.?If you're in love with the K-01, but really need an eye-level finder, consider tracking down a dedicated 60mm optical viewfinder and slide it into the camera's hot shoe. You'll have to trust the camera's autofocus and the framing will be a bit rough, but it should make it a bit more practical for quick street shots.

The larger body paves the way for a solid layout of controls. There's a standard mode dial, control wheel, and shutter release up top, along with EV Compensation, programmable green and red buttons, and the flash release, which doubles as the Delete button when reviewing shots. On the rear panel you'll find dedicated buttons to adjust ISO, Flash output, the Self Timer, and White Balance. There's also a button for Autofocus/Auto Exposure Lock, and the standard Info, Menu, Play, and OK buttons.

Stanford, CA -- The Plant Metabolic Network (http://www.plantcyc.org/), which is based at Carnegie's Department of Plant Biology, has launched four new online databases that offer an unprecedented view of the biochemical pathways controlling the metabolism of corn, soybeans, wine grapes, and cassavafour important species of crop plant. The new databases will serve as a critical resource for scientists working with these species to increase crop production, enhance biofuel development, or explore novel medicines.

Meeting the ever-expanding demand for food, biofuel and phyto-pharmaceutical production will require a comprehensive understanding of the enzymes, biochemical pathways and regulatory networks that control metabolism in plants. The goal of the Plant Metabolic Network is to facilitate such understanding by providing a detailed, genome-scale view of the chemical reactions taking place in plant cells. These metabolic reactions include those that convert carbon dioxide and sunlight into chemical energy, import essential mineral nutrients from the soil into plant roots, aid plants in defending against environmental stress, and otherwise allow plants to maintain life. By providing rich information on these processes, the Plant Metabolic Network enables efforts to elucidate steps in poorly understood plant biochemical processes, as well as discover unique, previously uncharacterized enzymes important to plant life.

The Plant Metabolic Network research team consists of plant scientists, scientific curators, post-doctoral scholars, and student interns. It is led by Carnegie staff scientist Sue Rhee. The group employs a number of approaches to generate the information housed in each database, integrating techniques and concepts from a wide range of fields including molecular sequence analysis, artificial intelligence, statistics, plant molecular biology, and plant biochemistry.

The team created a computational pipeline called E2P2 to perform metabolism-related discovery on sequenced plant genomes in order to place the rapidly expanding pool of plant genomic and transcriptomic sequence data into a metabolic framework. Importantly, the pipeline allows for a consistent, systematic, and high throughput approach for metabolism-related analysis of plant genome data. The data generated by the pipeline is rigorously reviewed using the scientific literature to ensure the quality of each released database. Up to ten more databases will be forthcoming later this year. Corn, soybeans, wine grapes, and cassava were selected for early release because of their economic and agricultural importance to various regions.

"Wine grapes are an important crop for the state of California; corn and soybeans are the number one and two crops of the United States, both as a source of food and biofuel; cassavaalso called manioc and yucais one of the most-common sources of food worldwide and a tremendously important crop for combating hunger," said Dr. Rhee.

"That's why we decided to release the databases for these plants right away, even before we started preparing a manuscript describing this work, to help researchers get started in improving production and yield of these crucial crops."

Manslaughter charged in Tacoma boy's death

(AP) ? A mother who authorities say left her 3-year-old son unrestrained in a car after she placed a pistol under the driver's seat has been charged with manslaughter in the death of the boy, who shot himself in the head while the woman went to get food.

The woman's boyfriend, who is the gun's owner, was also charged.

"Nothing is sadder than the death of a child, and when the death is the result of criminal negligence, there needs to be accountability," Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist said Wednesday. "Guns are inherently dangerous, and the law, as well as common sense, requires that guns be handled responsibly, especially around children."

The mother, Jahnisha McIntosh, 23, and her boyfriend, Eric Vita, 22, made their initial appearance on the second-degree manslaughter charges Wednesday afternoon in Pierce County Superior Court. They both pleaded not guilty.

Julio Segura-McIntosh's death on March 14 was the third child shooting in Western Washington within three weeks. On Feb. 22, an 8-year-old girl was critically wounded by a gun that went off in a classmate's backpack in a Bremerton school. On March 10, the 7-year-old daughter of a Marysville police officer was killed when her brother found a gun in the family car.

In Julio's case, Vita and McIntosh had stopped for gas in Tacoma. Vita, who has a concealed weapons permit, removed his gun from his waistband to avoid alarming the clerk and placed it under the passenger seat, the prosecutor said.

Julio had unbuckled himself and climbed into the front seat to ask his mother for candy. McIntosh moved the gun from under the passenger seat to under the driver's seat so Julio could not reach it. Then, she went inside the convenience store for food, leaving Julio unrestrained, the prosecutor said.

Julio found the gun and shot himself in the head. McIntosh's 8-month old daughter was in the car at the time and was not hurt.

Friends and family told detectives that Vita routinely showed off the gun with a laser sight and on one occasion offered to let Julio hold the gun before another adult intervened.

Vita's attorney, David Gehrke, told KOMO that that shooting was a tragedy that has left everyone involved in shock. Vita acted reasonably, he said.

"I think he was being very careful. He did not just leave the gun there, without another adult present. And I think if the mother had stayed in there, this probably would not have happened," Gehrke said.

"My understanding is that the child went from the back seat to the front seat, got the gun, the mom took it away and said, 'No, leave that alone,' and then put it under her seat. And then inexplicably she got out and went into the convenience store to buy something," he said.

Gehrke said he's not blaming the mother.

"She lost her child, and that should be punishment for any parent in a circumstance like this," he said.

The child shootings have raised questions about Washington's gun laws. The state is one of 23 that doesn't have a specific law to prevent child access to firearms, such as mandatory trigger locks or criminal penalties for adults who allow children to access guns, according to the San Francisco-based group Legal Community Against Violence.

Washington state law is specific about carrying loaded pistols in vehicles, however. A person with a concealed weapons permit must lock the gun and conceal it from view if it is left in the car.

In the Bremerton classroom shooting that nearly killed Amina Kocer-Bowman, the Kitsap County prosecutor charged the mother of a boy who brought the gun in his backpack and the mother's boyfriend with felony assault for allowing the boy access to the .45-caliber handgun. Jamie Lee Chaffin, and her boyfriend, Douglas L. Bauer, have pleaded not guilty.

In the Stanwood shooting, the Snohomish County prosecutor's office said Wednesday the shooting is still under investigation by the sheriff's office. When the case is sent to the prosecutor's office, it will decide whether charges should be filed against Officer Derek Carlile, who left a loaded gun in the car.

Snohomish sheriff's spokesman Kevin Prentiss said Wednesday that investigators are wrapping up loose ends and finishing interview transcripts, and the case should go to the prosecutor's office within two weeks. Detectives used child interview specialists to question children.

Making car payment take priority, study finds

(AP) ? The recession and its hangover may have turned bill-paying habits upside down. Cash-strapped Americans are paying off their car loans before they pay credit card bills and make mortgage payments, a study finds.

It used to be that Americans would pay their home loans first, then their credit card and car loans. After all, homes have been the most valuable possession for most people for decades, and nobody wanted to jeopardize that.

But TransUnion, a credit information company, studied the payment patterns of 4 million Americans with at least one car loan, one credit card and a mortgage and found a clear priority for staying current on the car loan.

Among Americans who were late on payments last year, 39 percent were delinquent on the mortgage while current on the car loan and credit cards, and 17 percent were late on credit cards while current on the other two.

Only 10 percent were late on the car loan while current on the other two. When TransUnion first did the study in 2006, staying current on the mortgage was the priority, says Ezra Becker, the company's vice president of research and consulting.

"Today, most people need a car to get to a job or to look for a job, and that has made cars a priority," he says.

It hasn't helped that home prices keep falling while the mortgage remains by far the biggest payment for most people. The latest Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller home price index found that prices in big cities had fallen to 2002 levels, down 34 percent from the peak.

There is also more leeway on the mortgage. Foreclosure can take two to three years. Cars can be repossessed 90 days after people stop paying.

Matt Saxton of Columbia, Md., was not surprised by the study's results. Saxton is on unpaid medical leave from work, recovering from spine surgery and relying on his savings.

Saxton says he dares not be late on his car payment and risk having his car repossessed. Instead, he's decided to be late on his credit cards and student loans.

"I can work with the credit card companies. They won't shut off or take away anything," says Saxton, who made a $474 payment this week. "I won't have the ability to get to work or even get another car if they repossess this one."

Govt finds airwaves for possible wireless data

(AP) ? The federal government has identified a large block of airwaves that can be freed to meet growing demand for movies, games and other data-intensive activities on smartphones and other mobile devices.

Wireless and technology companies have been clamoring for more spectrum. The 95 megahertz-wide band identified by the Commerce Department can support at least two new national wireless data networks.

But first, the government will have to find new homes for the agencies currently using that spectrum. That could involve sharing arrangements.

The government could spend as much as $18 billion over 10 years moving current users of the spectrum to new locations on the airwaves. The government said Tuesday that it hopes to make up for it by auctioning that spectrum to companies.

Pam Houston | Pam Houston: The TNB Self-Interview | The Nervous ...

I?ve heard you say (because of course, I am you) that poets have influenced your work.? Can you tell us how they influenced Contents May Have Shifted in particular?

I went to graduate school in a creative writing program that housed both Mark Strand and Larry Levis, unquestionably two of the greatest poets of their time.? I almost couldn?t help but to have learned to revere poetry?Strand?s compression of big ideas and Larry?s gut wrenching associative leaps.

What reading poetry has taught me, I think, is that when meaning gets made associatively, rather than logically or chronologically, we feel it in a different part of our bodies, and, I would argue, we feel it more strongly, like a punch.? One of the things Contents is about is memory, the way a killer whale might make you think of a strand of white-heart trade beads, which might make you think of a drink your father used to order called a Negroni.? Also, when you are raised by alcoholics, there is almost no such thing as chronology, no such thing as one thing logically following another; and everything that is told is always told slant.

One poet in particular whose work I was thinking about the whole time I was writing this book was Carl Phillips, his book Riding Westward in particular, which I think wrestles with some of the same questions Contents does.

?

And what questions would those be?

Is it a writers? duty to allow herself to be driven by her more insidious compulsions?? How can I be a decent human being and this other, darker thing all at the same time?? What about belief, and the problem language has representing the ineffable?? Can the image stand in?? Sometimes? Almost?

?

Speaking of identity, I noticed that your name is Pam and your narrator?s name is Pam, but Contents May Have Shifted says right on the cover, ?a novel.?? WTF?

Yeah, and now the interviewer?s name is Pam too, so all of a sudden there are three of us here!

The simplest reason it says ?a novel? on the cover is that the W.W. Norton designer first showed us that photo without the cloud, and my editor and I thought it represented the book well, but was maybe a little cold.?? Then they added the cloud, and that warmed it up but made it, we thought, too sentimental.? Then we put the words inside the cloud and that cut down the sentimentality factor enough so we felt we could keep the cloud and the warmth it provided.

A more complete answer would be that I am happiest working in between things.? Between fiction and nonfiction, between something you might call prose poems and more traditionally shaped chapters, between the novel and the shorter form.? I even live, literally, on the top of the Continental Divide in Colorado where half of the water goes east, and the other half west.? I wrote a whole essay about this inclination of mine to split the difference between categories called ?Corn Maze,? to be published simultaneously with Contents May Have Shifted, and you can find it on the Hunger Mountain web site, and eventually in a book Jill Talbot is editing called Metawritings (forthcoming from Iowa in May.)

But the short version is, I want to be able to write primarily from my own actual experience, and I want the freedom to shape the story in ways that give it power, which often involves altering what actually happened in any number of ways.? Additionally, I don?t believe we are capable of ever really telling a story the way it really happened, because of the ultimate failure of language to mean, because of the failure of memory, because of our failures of courage, because of our desires, because of the twenty-five people who saw the same car accident, and so on.

Also, when I was in grad school there were only two choices:? fiction or poetry, and I chose fiction.? I understand that for some people it is very important to say, ?this really happened to me,? and I have all the respect in the word for what those people are doing.? It is not important to me to be able to say that.? What is important to me is to pay strict attention out in the world and collect things that are story worthy, and then to try to shape the story the way the story asks to be shaped.

?

Who were your early influences?

The first book I remember really loving was Doctor Seuss?s On Beyond Zebra, which was about a secret alphabet?26 more letters beyond the 26 we are familiar with that you could use to describe all kinds of marvelous creatures.? After that it was pretty much straight to the Modernists:? Joyce and Faulkner spoke to me in particular, but one of the first reviews of my first books said, ?These are the stories that might have emerged if a smart woman had followed Hemingway around.?? If you take the three writers I admire most of all:? Toni Morrison, Alice Munro, and Don DeLillo, it would be hard to find the tiniest residue of their work in mine.? And yet I think it is probably in there, way under the surface.? If nothing else their books gave me a kind of permission.? I do hear actual echoes of a few other writers I love in my own work:? Ron Carlson, Lorrie Moore, and Amy Hemple.? When I read a Ron Carlson story, I can usually feel what he is up to in there?can feel how the story got made, even as I am blown away by its power.? In his case it may be because we had the same editor and the same teacher, but it is almost as if I can hear him thinking as I read.? When I read Jazz, on the other hand, it?s like I?m watching magic performed right under my nose.

?

What influences you besides the work of other writers?

Music is the first thing that comes to mind.? It?s hard to imagine Contents May Have Shifted existing without Wilco?s, A Ghost Is Born, just to name one example.? It?s hard to imagine being a person at all if I hadn?t listened to Jackson Browne?s Late For The Sky ten thousand times when I was a teenager.? Leonard Cohen is, even now, teaching me so many things about sex and faith and how to move through the world with a sense of grace and wonder. It?s possibly that nothing makes me as instantly and profoundly happy as seeing Mavis Staples say ?Beautiful!? right as the Staples sing the last notes of The Weight in the film The Last Waltz, Martin Scorsese?s tribute to The Band, a film I have watched at least 50 times and require everyone who comes to the ranch to watch with the speakers turned up, as the film instructs, loud.? Throw in Van Morrison, Bruce Springsteen (I am from New Jersey after all), and more recently Counting Crows, Bright Eyes, and Modest Mouse (especially when I am really angry), and I wouldn?t know how to begin to disentangle that soundtrack from my writing or my life.

Musicians, I have always felt, have better access to their emotions than writers, because they have the ability to express them two ways at once.? Writers taught me how to think, by and large, but musicians taught me how to feel.

?

What have you read lately that got you really excited? (This is always my favorite question so of course I asked it of myself.)

1. Cheryl Strayed?s new memoir, Wild.? It made the other people on the airplane afraid of me because I was either crying or shaking the chairs with my laughter.

2. Terry Tempest Williams, When Women Were Birds.? Gorgeous meditation on what it means for a woman of a certain age to come fully into her own voice.

3. Yiyun Li, Gold Boy, Emerald Girl.?? The novella this collection contains, ?Kindness,? might be the most elegant and powerful thing I read all year.

4.? Colm Toibin, The Empty Family.? This collection grew on me and grew on me for weeks after I put it down.? Which is to say, I loved it while I was reading it, and in the weeks to come I realized I was still living with it in all the best ways.

5.? Thomas Pletzinger, Funeral for a Dog.? This was the last book editor Carol Houck Smith had her hands on, and it is weird and kind of wonderful?and no, I don?t just like it because of the dog.

6.?? Jon Davis, Preliminary Report.? A poet who recalls Levis in all the best ways, but is very much his own man.? I read ?Loving Horses? to anyone who will listen?friends, my in-laws, the guy who delivers the propane?

(AP) ? George Zimmerman once took criminal justice classes at the community college and was practically a one-man neighborhood watch in his gated part of town, calling police close to 50 times over the past eight years to report such things as slow-driving vehicles, strangers loitering in the neighborhood and open garages.

Now, suddenly, people are wondering if the 28-year-old Zimmerman is an earnest if somewhat zealous young man who was just looking out for his neighborhood, or a wannabe cop who tried to take justice into his own hands.

He has been at the center of a growing furor over vigilantism, self-defense and racial profiling since he shot and killed an unarmed black teenager who was walking through his neighborhood Feb. 26 carrying only a bag of Skittles and an iced tea.

Zimmerman, a light-skinned Hispanic, has claimed self-defense in the slaying of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin and has not been charged, but many black leaders are demanding his arrest, and state and federal authorities are investigating. Florida's Stand Your Ground law on self-defense gives people wide latitude to use deadly force.

Attorneys for Martin's parents say Zimmerman is a "loose cannon."

"He's a wannabe police officer," lawyer Benjamin Crump said. "Why did he have a gun?"

But some neighbors welcomed his vigilance, at least before the shooting.

Samantha Leigh Hamilton, an auto-dealership employee who has lived on Zimmerman's street for about a year, said that she once left her garage door up and Zimmerman noticed it while out walking his dog. He notified another neighbor, who let Hamilton know.

"The only impression I have of George Zimmerman is a good one," Hamilton said Wednesday.

Hamilton said another neighbor, a black woman, would regularly inform Zimmerman when she was out of town so that he could keep an eye on her place. Hamilton said that when she moved into the middle-class, racially mixed community of about 250 identical townhouses, the black neighbor told her, "Hey, if you need anything, you picked a really good area, since George is part of our neighborhood watch."

Zimmerman, who was captain of the neighborhood watch and licensed to carry a gun, made 46 calls to police since 2004, according to department records.

In one police call report, the dispatcher noted that Zimmerman was calling about a vehicle "driving real slow, looking at all the other vehicles in the complex and blasting music." In another call from last August, Zimmerman reported on two black male teens in the neighborhood. He considered them suspicious.

A police spokesman in Sanford, a city of 53,000 people outside Orlando that is 57 percent white and 30 percent black, did not return calls for comment about Zimmerman's repeated reports.

Hamilton said there had been several break-ins in the past year, including one three doors away in which burglars took a TV and laptops.

"When I hear about him calling the police constantly, it kind of makes sense to me because we had so many break-ins recently," she said.

The homeowners association's February newsletter said that Sanford police had beefed up patrols in the neighborhood and that officers on bicycles were making random checks of front yards and backyards. It was not clear how big the neighborhood watch was, but Zimmerman was the dominant force.

"If you've been the victim of a crime within the community, after calling the police, please contact our captain, George Zimmerman ... so we can be aware and help address the issue with other residents," the newsletter said. It added that the neighborhood watch group was looking for more participants at its monthly meetings.

USAonWatch, the national neighborhood watch organization, said Zimmerman's watch had never registered with the group. A vice president of the homeowners association didn't return a call Wednesday.

According to police, Zimmerman spotted Martin walking through the community on the teen's way back from a convenience store. The teenager was visiting his father's fiance, who lived in the gated community. Zimmerman told a police dispatcher that Martin had his hand at his waistband and had something in his hand.

"This guy looks like he is up to no good ? he is on drugs or something," Zimmerman said.

The dispatcher advised Zimmerman not to follow Martin. Moments later, neighbors bombarded 911 with reports of a struggle between the men and the sound of a gunshot. When police officers arrived, Martin was lifeless, face down on the ground, while Zimmerman was bleeding from his head and his back was covered in grass, as if he had been on the ground, the police report said.

Sanford police issued a statement Wednesday defending their decision not to arrest Zimmerman. They said that when officers arrived, he claimed self-defense, "which at the time was supported by physical evidence and testimony."

Police Chief Bill Lee said Zimmerman claimed he was attacked by Martin after he had given up his chase and was returning to his truck.

In a letter to the Orlando Sentinel, Zimmerman's father said his son wasn't a racist. Zimmerman's mother is Hispanic. "He would be the last to discriminate for any reason whatsoever," Robert Zimmerman wrote.

Zimmerman moved with his parents from Manassas, Va., to Florida about a decade ago. He lived with his parents in nearby Lake Mary for several years before moving to the Retreat at Twin Lakes, records show. He lives in the gated community with his wife, Shellie, a licensed cosmetologist, but is now in hiding because of death threats.

Zimmerman had taken classes at the local community college, but his work history was spotty. He worked at a pressure washing business and then at CarMax, the national used-car dealer, but left in 2008, according to court records. It was not immediately clear what he did for CarMax or what he has been doing since then.

In 2005, Zimmerman was charged with resisting arrest with violence. State alcohol agents said Zimmerman pushed them while they were arresting a friend of his during an underage drinking operation at a bar. Zimmerman avoided a conviction by going into a pretrial program that is offered to people with no prior arrests.

Neighbor Raffie Gaffar said he is troubled by the fact that Zimmerman patrolled the neighborhood with a gun. Garrar, a registered nurse, said he had never met Zimmerman and lived in a different section of the development.

"That is crazy. That is totally crazy," Gaffar said. "Why does he have to carry a gun? Something is totally wrong with that picture."

New iPad explodes ... when attacked by lasers

12 hrs.

Every time a new gadget is released, especially an Apple gadget, videos showing the destruction of that new toy appear on the Internet. You might've seen plenty?of those clips already?? from Blendtec's Will It Blend? campaign?to SquareTrade's iPad pavement drops ? but you should still watch one more. Why? Because it involves an iPad ... and lasers ... and explosions.

The clip was created?by?video producer Lowell Niles, who uses Wicked Lasers?products?in his regular video work. He tells me that he's always seeking?ways to incorporate various light effects in his work and that he finds lasers produce some fantastic backdrops. Naturally this means that he has a small pile of powerful Wicked Lasers products ??such as the Spyder III Krypton, Arctic, and Torch?? sitting around.

After hearing his friends talk about the new iPad and reading that lithium-ion polymer batteries?? such as those found in the iPad?? may explode if heated, Niles decided to see what happens when a new iPad is exposed to laser beams.

It also didn't hurt, he tells me, that Wicked Lasers offered?a $1000 laser to the first person to destroy an iPad using only the company's laser products. The deal was great in Niles' opinion, since the iPad he destroyed only cost him $500.

And besides, he was more than happy to make this video since he, like many of us, likes "to see [things] blown up with lasers."

RolePlayGateway is proudly powered by obscene amounts of caffeine, duct tape, Wordpress, Moodle, phpBB, AJAX Chat, Mantis, support from Mary Bedard (biochemist, photographer, and adventurer!). and the efforts of many dedicated writers and roleplayers. It operates under a "don't like it, suggest an improvement" platform, and we gladly take suggestions for improvements or changes.

The custom-built "roleplay" system was designed and implemented by Eric Martindale as of July 2009. All attempts to replicate or otherwise emulate this system and its method of organizing roleplay are strictly prohibited without his express written and contractual permission; violators will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
